This Activity Adventure is designed for children to learn all about SCAVENGING birds of prey.

Given the popularity of “
Pirates of the Caribbean”, we begin the event by defining how a scavenger is similar to a pirate and how, in raptor terms, the habit of stealing things has caused various species to come into conflict with man and often, to end up on the wrong side of the law!  Using as examples the iconic American Bald Eagle and our own Red Kites, we look at why scavenging birds have been unjustly persecuted in the past, and howconservationists are now trying to save these misunderstood species!

Though usually regarded as
Nature's dustbin-men, the importance to the food chain of scavenging birds who steal from others or feed exclusively on carrion, is only now being fully understood, so we examine food chains and the quirky habits of the many birds that resort to food piracy to obtain a meal.

Activities on the day will include making nests from re-cycled materials; designing & making a
Jolly Roger flag or Pirates Hat; making face masks or face-painting a Pirate tattoo; making a map and taking part in a treasure hunt; at least one flying display and finally a rare chance to get close to the birds, with plenty of great photo opportunities - so bring a photo-phone or camera!

The Activity Adventure starts at 10.30am and finishes at about 2.15pm. Advance booking is necessary so please e-mail
info@owlbarn.co.uk or phone 01449 711425 to make arrangements.  Please note that for reasons of safety there is no actual handling of birds by young visitors during this event
