World Rainforest Day 2026
World Rainforest Day was created and convened in 2017 by Rainforest Partnership. Celebrated annually on 22nd June, it serves as a global reminder of the importance of protecting the world’s rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they support. The theme for 2026, “The Forest Within You,” highlights the idea that rainforests are not just distant places on a map; they are deeply connected to our lives, influencing the air we breathe, the climate we depend on, and the countless species that call them home.
One species particularly well adapted to life in the rainforest is the Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata), a striking owl native to the Neotropics of Central and South America. Their name comes from the distinctive ring of white feathers around their large, bright yellow eyes, giving the appearance of wearing spectacles. Interestingly, juvenile spectacled owls look very different from adults, displaying an almost inverse colour pattern, with predominantly white plumage contrasted by a dark facial mask, while adults are mainly blackish-brown with pale facial markings.
Although the spectacled owl is currently classified as Least Concern, its population is thought to be decreasing. Habitat loss and forest degradation remain significant threats, demonstrating how even species that are not yet considered endangered can be affected by the ongoing loss of rainforest ecosystems.
Here at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, we are fortunate to care for Cecil, our resident spectacled owl. World Rainforest Day provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate species like Cecil and to reflect on the importance of protecting the rainforests that sustain so much of our planet’s wildlife.
